Family said Nick Laureys was riding his bike home from fishing with a friend when he was hit
McHENRY COUNTY, Ill. (WLS) -- A 15-year-old bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday night in the northwest suburbs, police said.
Two 15-year-olds were biking south on Terra Cotta Road, near the intersection of Deering Oaks Lane in unincorporated Crystal Lake, just after 9:30 p.m., when a car hit one of the bikers from behind, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office said.
The vehicle kept driving, the sheriff's office said.
The teen was taken to Northwestern Medicine Hospital McHenry, where he died, police said.

The biker who was hit did have a red taillight that was activated on his bike, police said.
Family identified the boy as Nick Laureys, and they're demanding answers.
The teen was riding his bike home after fishing with a friend, family said.
His uncle said he was just weeks shy of his 16th birthday.
Lance Laureys described the crash as "plowing" through his nephew.
He said Nick Laureys was a happy kid, who loved to rebuild ATVs. He said he had his entire life ahead of him.
"He was a good kid. He had so much for him, and this person just took it away. They didn't slow down, nothing," Laureys said. "What is it going to take for these people to slow down or just watch?"
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner's Office are investigating.
The sheriff's office said the vehicle involved may have been a dark-colored red 2017-2018 Jeep Cherokee.
