Fourth of July holiday weekend shootings across Chicago have left at least 55 people shot, eight fatally, so far, the police department said.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- At least 55 people have been shot, eight fatally, in gun violence across the city over the Fourth of July weekend, Chicago police said.

The number is a drastic decrease from last year, which saw at least 105 people shot, including 22 killed over the same four-day holiday weekend period.

While this weekend's trend is a marked improvement compared to last year, police still had their hands full.

As police continue to investigate the holiday weekend shootings, a regroup took place at City Hall Monday morning. It included Mayor Brandon Johnson, CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling and Garien Gatewood, the Deputy Mayor for Community Safety.

"The levels of violence we saw around the city was obviously frustrating," Gatewood said. "Not just from this weekend, but if you go back before that."

ABC7 tracked holiday weekend shootings from the morning of Thursday, July 3 at midnight to the evening of Sunday, July 6 at 11:59 p.m. This year's numbers do not include the mass shooting in River North that saw four people killed and 18 injured just an hour before the time frame in question.

"People have to feel it, and I know a lot of people felt trauma this weekend, and there were a lot of us out on the ground helping out with that," Gatewood said.

Gatewood did not elaborate on CPD's continued search for those responsible for the River North Shooting, but he did say they will be launching an Emergency Assistance Center for those victimized by it later this week. He emphasized the importance of not just holding perpetrators accountable, but also helping those coping with the aftermath of gun violence incidents as well.
